(L'éclaireur)

The German artist Joachim Bandau has been interested since the early 1960s in the relationship between sculpture and ground, in solid and void, in forms visible and invisible, and in what the eye cannot see. In the early 1970s he began to create anthropomorphic sculptures mounted on wheels using found objects and glass-fibre reinforced polyester. Made at the height of the Cold War, this “spy-cum-sarcophagus” evokes the political and technological preoccupations of its time, yet also seems to offer a disturbing comment on today’s debates about individual freedom and the surveillance of private life.
