Some of Sylvie Fleury’s work involves the alteration of well-known works by male 20th-century artists. Here she has glued onto a copy of a Mondrian painting, projecting just beyond its edge, rectangles of faux fur that seem to have come straight from a novelty shop. While the artist has used the primary colours dear to Mondrian, they have lost their formal purity, becoming tawdry. While Fleury is interested in the connections between art, fashion and the commodity, her point here is essentially feminist, humorously highlighting how women were for a long time excluded from art.
