After many years in a psychiatric hospital, Dwight Mackintosh was referred the Creative Growth Art Center, a studio and gallery for disabled artists in California. Severely limited in his verbal expression, Mackintosh used drawing as his preferred artistic medium but also as a means of communication. From the 1980s, he depicted cars, buses and motorbikes in great detail. Here, an aerodynamic car is placed below indecipherable text written in a seemingly hurried scrawl. Everything seems to suggest the movement of an imminent departure.
