As part of the Constellation program, which runs throughout the Centre Pompidou’s renovation period, the Centre’s film programming is relocating to mk2 Bibliothèque (entrance BNF) in Paris.

Renamed and rebranded in the Centre Pompidou’s colors, the current entrance located at the heart of the Bibliothèque nationale de France François-Mitterrand becomes mk2 Bibliothèque × Centre Pompidou. This venue—featuring four screening rooms and a central atrium—will host retrospectives, thematic cycles, festivals, previews, regular events, talks, and masterclasses curated by the Centre Pompidou and the Cinémathèque du documentaire by the Bibliothèque publique d’information.

The program mk2 Bibliothèque × Centre Pompidou

De la violence en Amérique

16 – 25 January 2026

 Screenings, encounters

As the United States prepares to mark the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, the Centre Pompidou presents a cycle of screenings, talks, and debates examining violence and its representations in American society. Echoing Alexis de Tocqueville’s political essay Democracy in America, published nearly two centuries ago in 1835, the programme also pays tribute to British art historian Lawrence Alloway (1926–1990) and his seminal book Violent America, published in 1971.

This cycle offers a dialogue between the classical Hollywood cinema of directors such as Robert Aldrich, Fritz Lang, Robert Siodmak, Douglas Sirk, and Orson Welles, and the underground and experimental films of the same era, preserved in the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou—from Bruce Conner to Paul Sharits, including Maya Deren, Ken Jacobs, Jonas Mekas, Claes Oldenburg, and others.

In parallel with the screenings, a series of conversations and debates will bring together researchers, critics, and contemporary artists, exploring the persistence of a national imaginary built on violence, along with its historical roots and ongoing relevance.

Jonás Trueba
"Le goût du présent"

27 January – 10 February 2026

Complete Retrospective | Preview Screening | Masterclass | Encounters | Performance | Book Launch

With the filmmaker and his collaborators in attendance

First discovered in France with the film Eva in August (La virgen de agosto, 2019), Jonás Trueba (born in 1981 in Madrid) is a discreet yet prolific craftsman of contemporary Spanish cinema. The author of eight feature films in sixteen years—four of which have never been released in France—he heads his own production company, Los Ilusos Films, and has worked from the outset with the same collaborators, both behind and in front of the camera, crafting each stage of his films' creation within a modest production framework.

At once light and melancholic, Jonás Trueba’s work draws its vitality as much from the pleasure of conversation and shared moments as from solitude and its inner turmoil—echoes of the existential questions that shape the daily lives of a generation. His storytelling unfolds with great freedom, where life and cinema are intimately intertwined.

For the occasion, Jonás Trueba has created a short film, Aux Vistillas, commissioned by the Centre Pompidou as part of its "Où en êtes-vous ?" collection. The programme also features a new version of his second feature, Los ilusos, presented for the first time, along with an unreleased full-length film made especially for this retrospective.

The venue

Founded in 1974, mk2 is a leading force in European independent cinema. The group operates 23 cinemas in France and Spain, attracting over 7 million viewers annually. An international producer and distributor (Anatomy of a Fall, Kaizen), mk2 is also an integrated media and creative agency.

For 50 years, mk2 has championed auteur cinema that offers critical insight into the world, combining bold artistic works, major popular hits, and cultural events. Designed as living spaces, mk2 cinemas host exhibitions, debates, lecture series, and masterclasses, fostering dialogue between cinema and all forms of creative expression.

A true hub for cultural innovation, mk2 Bibliothèque now houses mk2 × Centre Pompidou, extending a long-standing partnership between the two institutions. Following the retrospective "Abbas Kiarostami. Les chemins de la liberté" in 2021, and the 2023 exhibition "Corps à Corps. Histoire(s) de la photographie", this collaboration continues to explore intersections between cinema, visual imagery, and contemporary art
