"The canvas ceases to be a projection screen, becomes a material." (Hantaï)
Exploring the relationship between the painting and its support in 1960, Simon Hantaï adopted "folding as a method". ln 1967 he began the Meuns series, named after the village where he lived, bringing together the four corners of a canvas soaked with paint to make a bag. Unfolded, it revealed an unpredictable work where the white of the canvas in reserve dialogues with the large monochrome forms. Leaving nothing completely to chance,
the artist used a brush to add traces of diluted paint between the four "petals".
