Paul Joostens’ work was characterised by his eclecticism. A post-Impressionist, Fauvist, Cubist and Expressionist in turn, he was part of the Dadaist movement in the Twenties. À l’Afrique, which dates from this period, is constructed in a gyratory movement similar to Cubo-Futurist compositions. The syncopated rhythm of the painting pays tribute to jazz music, then highly in vogue in artistic circles. “Africa” was the nickname of a black child who played in Mack Sennett’s Kid Comedies.
