Abeed Al Manazil (The House Negro)
2011
The work of Palestinian-born Ayman Yossri takes the form of an autobiographical reflection on the environment in which he grew up. Abeed Al Manazil (The House Negro) belongs to the ‘Subtitles’ series, in which the artist decontextualises film sub-titles to give them new significance. Here Yossri juxtaposes extracts from Malcolm X’s ‘Message to the Grass Roots’ speech of 1963, in which he denounces the oppressed who collaborate with the oppressors, with screen caps from Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X. In isolating the images from their narrative context, the artist seeks to rediscover the true, poignant sense of Malcolm X’s declarations.
