“To create a human environment with colour alone is to create a work of art in which groups will live and whose influence they will undergo. Changes to the workplace are certainly those that will change people most profoundly.” A painter by training, Georges Patrix embarked in the early 1950s on the design of polychrome environments. Though much of his work indeed focussed on the factory, in the 1970s his practice came to extend to the design of public space. In 1975, his work on the colour scheme for the Gare de Lyon allowed him to further develop the principles of “harmony by colour association” established ten years earlier. The colour progression applied to the walls of the waiting area introduces a monumental rhythm, conferring a distinctive dynamics on the space.
