Lina McKinlay, fille d'un riche général, épouse John Aystgarth, coureur et dépensier. Il monte une affaire immobilière avec son ami Beaky. Mais quand celui-ci meurt subitement, Lina soupçonne son mari d'être le coupable. Elle est alors persuadée qu'il veut se débarrasser d'elle. Un film d'une constante maîtrise sur l'ambiguïté des rapports humains.
