A portrait of the artist’s daughter, Marguerite au chat noir, is one of a lovely series of groundbreaking, stylised portraits of young women that Henri Matisse painted between 1908 and 1911. Georges Duthuit, who married Marguerite in December 1923, saw in it a recollection of the ancient paintings of Faiyum or of the Bawit monastery in Egypt, for Matisse had been “able to accommodate questions of overall vision”, to grasp “the general – religious, one might say – character of human existence”. It is in memory of their son Claude Duthuit that Mme Claude Duthuit donated this outstanding paint...
