Reflecting the exhibition dedicated to Christian Marclay, the Centre Pompidou the Swiss-American artist carte blanche for a concert based on his visual and musical works.
Since the late 1990s, Marclay has created a number of "graphic scores" that challenge the conventions of traditional musical composition. Designed to prompt a musical response on the part of musicians, these works – some of which are presented in the exhibition – use video, photography, found images and ready-to-use objects from our everyday environment.
"My score is just a spark, it's the responsibility of the musicians to feed the fire, to stoke it, so that it becomes a meeting point. Each performance is different, depending on the musicians and the choice of images. […] The hierarchy between the composer, the musician and the listener is completely overthrown." Christian Marclay

Christian Marclay, was born in San Rafael in California in 1955. He is a Swiss musician, composer and visual artist. He emerged from the rock and punk culture of the 1970s, questioning and criticizing the mercantile use of vinyl discs and cultural industries. Mastering sound and visual collages by reusing old media (vinyl discs, motion picture film rolls), he also makes video pieces using film archives which he sets to music as scores, exploring the connections between sound, photography, video and film.
