“Evidence” is an audio and visual montage that traverses the work of Arthur Rimbaud, Antonin Artaud and René Daumal in their journeys to new horizons. Stimulated by these metaphysical voyages, the musical and sound composition of Perfect Vision is the starting point for this new multidisciplinary exhibition, collectively designed by Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith for the Centre Pompidou.

“Evidence” is a poetic, immersive journey, an ode to a world without borders, a contemporary reflection on the infinite and universal, a spiritual quest for unity as a living and life-giving presence. The physical, sound and visual voyages of Soundwalk Collective enter into infinite dialogue with the poetic trajectories of American musician and poet Patti Smith, creating a new vision and language through this exploration. Between audio, films, abstract images, objects and creations collected throughout their travels, this exhibition guides the public through a vast exploratory installation that juxtaposes photos, texts and original works by Patti Smith, from her personal collections and the Musée National d’Art Moderne and MoMA collections. As a testimony to the existence of these poets and their inspiration, it offers true immersion into their spirit and art.

Between 2019 and 2021, Stephan Crasneanscki and Patti Smith worked together to create Perfect Vision, a triptych of albums that draw inspiration from the texts of three iconic French poets: Antonin Artaud, Arthur Rimbaud and René Daumal. At the heart of the work is the necessity for these poets to travel to different horizons, to discover a new vision and perspective of themselves and their art. Recorded respectively in the Sierra Tarahumara in Mexico, the Abyssinian Highlands in Ethiopia and the peaks of the Himalayas in India, these albums are based on the idea that each landscape holds sleeping memories, testimonies to the passage of humans. Produced in collaboration with Grammy award winner Russell Elevado, Leonardo Heiblum, and Simone Merli, member of Soundwalk Collective, each album retraces the footsteps of poets, leading us through sound and musical landscapes, revisited by the incantatory voice of Patti Smith.

Horticulteurs de Peyote Desert Plants Ltd

Soundwalk Collective est un collectif expérimental fondé par Stephan Crasneanscki à New York en 2000, et rejoint par Simone Merli en 2008. Leur travail artistique combine anthropologie, ethnographie, narration non linéaire, psychogéographie, observation de la nature et explorations dans l'enregistrement. La source de leurs œuvres est toujours liée à des lieux spécifiques, naturels ou artificiels, et nécessite de longues périodes de voyages d'investigation et de travail sur le terrain. Outre Patti Smith, le collectif a collaboré avec Mulatu Astatke, Nan Goldin, Philip Glass, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Wim Wenders…
Leur travail a été exposé et présenté à l'opéra de Lyon ; au festival CTM, Berlin ; au Kw Institut, Berlin, au Barbican Centre, Londres ; au Berghain, Berlin…

Patti Smith, née à Chicago (1946) et élevée dans le sud du Jersey, a emménagé à New York en 1967. Ses nombreuses réalisations en tant qu’interprète, auteur, musicienne et artiste visuelle sont reconnues dans le monde entier. Sorti en 1975, le premier album de Patti Smith, Horses, a été inscrit au National Recording Registry de la Library of Congress en 2010 par le National Recording Preservation Board. Elle a été nominée à quatre reprises aux Grammy Awards et aux Golden Globes pour la chanson « Mercy Is » coécrite avec Lenny Kay pour le film Noah. En 2008, le documentaire de Steven Sebring, Patti Smith: Dream of Life, a reçu une nomination aux Emmy Awards. Patti Smith a reçu le prestigieux National Book Award 2010 pour ses mémoires à succès, Just Kids, qui relatent sa profonde amitié avec le photographe Robert Mapplethorpe et l’évolution de leur travail. Smith a reçu le titre de « Commandeur des arts et des lettres » du ministère français de la Culture. En 2007, elle a été intronisée au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Les photographies, dessins et installations de Patti Smith ont été exposés dans des galeries et des musées du monde entier. À l’heure actuelle, Patti Smith écrit, se produit, apporte son soutien aux questions de droits de l’homme et aux groupes environnementaux, principalement Pathway to Paris, une organisation à but non lucratif cofondée par sa fille, Jesse Paris Smith, qui propose des solutions tangibles pour lutter contre le climat mondial. Elle réside à New York. Enfin, elle a reçu la Légion d’honneur française pour sa carrière, le 21 mai 2022, pour l’ensemble de son œuvre.
