Since Phantom, his first feature film presented at the Venice Film Festival in 2000 and at the Centre Pompidou in 2002, João Pedro Rodrigues’ films have employed a singular fusion between twilight atmospheres and queer epiphanies. In 2016, Les Cinémas dedicated a full retrospective to him accompanied by the installation Santo António, designed with João Rui Guerra da Mata who collaborated with him on most of his films.
On his deathbed, Alfredo, a king without a crown, relives distant memories from his youth and remembers the time when he dreamed of becoming a firefighter. His encounter with the instructor Afonso, from the fire brigade, opens a new chapter in the lives of the two young men plunged into a world of love and desire…
