Performance
Sophie Jung
"Woman in an exterior (The Pissing Woman)"
1 - 2 Jul 2023

The event is over
For this new performance, Sophie Jung returns to her role as Frau Welt, a character in a permanent state of nudity, objectivized between desirability and death.
She guides us languorously through her private collection of nude portraits of herself painted by the worldwide western male avant-garde, while sharing amusing stories about the struggle of these "poor male artists" for recognition, along with secret and confidential anecdotes.
Exposed reclining on a chaise longue, she deconstructs the institutional format of the guided tour into a house-tour, show room, procession and prosopography, while using the labyrinth of adjacent rooms transformed into a boudoir to subvert the positions of the gazer and the gazed-upon and to challenge the imbalance of powers between the passive subject and the active object.
Sophie Jung (1982, Luxembourg), lives and works in Basel and Rome. She works with text, sculpture and performance and is interested in techniques of representation. She uses humour, shame, the absurd, raw anger, rhythm and rhyme, the burlesque, trials, friendship and makes a multiplicity of blunders/faux pas in order to challenge the rules of the white patriarchal world.
Her recent exhibitions include Sanetroyem in E.A.Shared Space, Tbilisi (Georgia); They Might Stay the Night, Casino Luxembourg (Luxembourg); Désactivation, Istituto Svizzero, Milan (Italy); Taxpayer’s Money for Frieze LIVE, London (United Kingdom); Dramatis Personae, JOAN, Los Angeles (United States) and The Bigger Sleep, Kunstmuseum Basel (Switzerland).
