Young Jean Lee

Straight White Men

16 - 19 Oct 2014

Centre Pompidou, Paris

The event is over

Young Jean Lee pursues her explorations on the question of gender as a social, cultural and political representation. In this new creation, she stages a father and his three sons – "white, heterosexual men" – reflecting the dominant archetypal figure that was long the "default voice" of Western societies. In using traditional codes of representation, the play explores what happens when one loses a privilege: that of forgetting that one is privileged. Her characters are torn between their desire to "do good" and to fall in line with the new principles of social justice, and their obsessional hunger for personal fulfilment, where individualism is raised as a moral precept. The Korean-American stage director mischievously observes this unique moment where certainties waver.
