When Jérôme Bel was asked to work with the performers of the Hora Theatre, professional actors with learning disabilities, the French choreographer at first refused. Intrigued, he then suggested meeting the actors, it was only then that he continued to work with them on stage. Disabled Theatre recreates this experience. Jérôme Bel again puts the performer at the heart of the process and the role of the individual in overturning the conventions of traditional portrayals and virtual invisibility of disabled people in our society. Because, he says, their amazing timing, their extraordinary physicality, their presence in the world threatens our idea of what it is to be human, like the idea we have about theatre.
