Collectif Ictus

Guest at Moviment

Biography

Ictus is a Brussels-based contemporary music ensemble.

Ictus has been co-residing with the P.A.R.T.S dance school and the Rosas company (directed by Anne-Teresa De Keersmaeker) since 1994, and has already co-created five productions, including Amor Constante and Repertoire Evening. The ensemble has also worked with other choreographers: Wim Vandekeybus, Maud Le Pladec, Noé Soulier, Eleanor Bauer, Fumiyo Ikeda, Etienne Guilloteau and Claire Croizé.

Ictus produces an annual season in Brussels, in partnership with the Kaaitheater and Bozar. The season is an opportunity to experiment with new programmes in front of a non-specialist amateur audience, in theatre, dance, performance and music. In this way, Ictus explores formats and means of listening, with very short or extended concerts, hidden programmes, the experimental series "Ictus Invites" in its own studios, large-scale concerts with the Brussels Philharmonic, and concert-festivals.

Initially united around the conductor Georges-Elie Octors, at a time when ensembles were conceived as mini-orchestras composed of high-level soloists, Ictus has since transformed into "an electric orchestra", hiring a regular sound engineer as an instrumentalist for example, and has become a multi-skilled collective of creative musicians dedicated to experimental music in its broadest sense.

Holding Present

 Dance, Music  Performance

A body joins another in motion. Another follows, and yet another. They build on each other. When do we perceive them as a multitude?

Inspired visually, lyrically and sound-wise by protest, Holding Present, a new collaboration between choreographer Ula Sickle and Ictus, the Brussels contemporary music ensemble, examines how an individual act can become a powerful collective movement. Weaving a network of existing and newly-commissioned compositions, a group of eight performers (four musicians and four dancers) slowly builds up a movement, a momentum, as they work toward the breaking point where individuals become a critical mass.

The performance also includes works by composers Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Didem Coskunseven and Stellan Veloce, with the musical instruments of the artist Gert Aertsen.
