Clues to the presence of spirits have slipped into this drawing.
Adéla Duchacova was part of the spiritualist current in the Giant Mountain region in northern Moravia (today Czech Republic). A working-class woman, she began to draw in 1910 and produced some hundred drawings over 25 years. Her husband also practiced spiritualism and they participated in collective drawings. Does the furtive eye hiding in the centre of the drawing echo the signature "Alfons" in the lower right corner? With these probable clues to the spirit guiding the medium’s hand, Duchacova was able to transcribe the presence of the afterlife with acuity.
