A self-proclaimed "Prophet", Robertson produced works marked by mystical visions and imaginary journeys.
A farm labourer and sign painter, Royal Robertson suffered from progressive mental illness. The departure of his wife, Adel, and their children worsened his condition and triggered a prodigious creative impulse. Using pencils, inks and felt-tip pens, he created new forms of architecture, vehicles and figures that were accompanied by inscriptions, the name Adell or the letter A. Here, a winged female figure - a fallen angel unable to enter heaven despite the momentum of her ascent - travels through space surrounded by imprecations, litanies and apocalyptic prophecies.
