Peinture n°6
1963
Although based on a gestural language, this early work by Parmentier foretells his future orientation, characterised by the rejection of subjective representation and the desire to demystify art.
ln his earliest paintings, Michel Parmentier stuck down various pieces of paper that he had found and covered them with white paint, thus creating works with multiple layers. Here, he used silver paper, which he left visible in the horizontal strip at the bottom. The construction of the work heralds Parmentier's paintings of large horizontal stripes alternating white and colour, developed from 1965 onwards, which he presented at the BMPT group's "Manifestations".
