Puppets
(Poupées)
2009
Playing on the codes of the music world, and notably the idea of “features”, the two artists have often collaborated. This project was prompted by an invitation to join a round table organised by exhibition curator Hans Ulrich Obrist in 2005. Rirkrit Tiravanija and Philippe Parreno decided to send a ventriloquist – a type of entertainer much appreciated in France – who performed a dialogue between two puppets representing the artists, playing on questions of representation and memory. The Puppets are doublets, both clumsy look-alikes and souvenirs of performance. The twosome raise a simple question: what is a subject, a person?
