Painter, sculptor and graphic artist Walter Pichler became friends in the early 1960s with architects Raimund Abraham and Hans Hollein, designing several projects for underground cities with the latter. With him too he staged the programmatic exhibition Architektur at Vienna’s Galerie St Stephan, where amongst others he showed La Chapelle a critique of megastructures. “I’ve always seen my works more as spaces than sculptures,” he said. The archaic forms of these sculptures / architectural models drew their incantatory force from the artist’s experiences on his travels in Mexico in 1962, when he discovered the Maya temples.
