In 1949, Ettore Sottsass was commissioned to design the interior of the Villa Grassoti, near Turin. Among other objects, he designed this ensemble in pale turquoise, the composition of which fits the spirit of Neoplasticism. Piet Mondrian and Theo Van Doesburg had laid the foundations as early as 1917: streamlined abstraction based on the use of primary colours and geometric shapes. This creation, which was entirely new in the post-war period, shows the spatial ingenuity of the combinations invented by the architect. It also reveals a very innovative sense of colour playing on unusual tonalities and contrasts. In 1949, the use of golden brass with “pastellized” turquoise went beyond the audacious colours of the 1960s. The ensemble, which is unique among the architect’s works, bears witness to his particular, precocious talent.
