When civil war broke out in 1936, Edmond Küss joined up alongside the Republicans, as did many other artists. Spain bears witness to the horror of the conflict, as does Guernica, painted by Picasso during the same period. The work is a religious allegory, with two tortured bodies in the centre taking the place of the Cross, surrounded by nightmarish scenes. A follower of social realism, Küss creates a composition with Cubist echoes, but his bluntly realistic treatment turns it into an anti-war manifesto.
