"I wanted with all my heart to paint the drama of my country. I would be like a Trojan horse from which fantastical figures would emerge." (Lam)
Wifredo Lam went back to Cuba in August 1941. After many years in Europe in the avant-garde art world, this return to his native land inspired him to make compositions tinged with magic, in which Afro-Cuban inspirations mixed with Picassoesque forms. As evidenced by this luxurious vegetation with a female nude emerging from it, her head reduced to crescent moon, her legs comparable to sugar canes and breasts looking like fruit clusters.
