After Plans mobiles, which could be manipulated by the viewer, Pol Bury's Multiplans, made from 1954 onwards, were animated by an electric motor that slowly rotated coloured rods. The relief of geometric patterns is transformed before the viewer's gaze. Although still reliant on the traditional format of the painting, Bury was soon to break free of it by making mobile sculptures with imperceptible movement.
