Le Bal Bullier
1913
This local dance scene, designed as a frieze, presents tango dancers in a blur of whirling brightly coloured forms.
A dynamic interplay of forms and curves unfurls in this apparently abstract composition. The contrasting colours evoke the "simultaneous" garments designed by Sonia Delaunay, which she wore to go dancing with Robert at the Bal Bullier on the boulevard Saint-Michel. Under the haloes of the electric globes, couples emerge from left to right, their arms around each other's waist, unless there is only one couple, captured at different moments.
