The Knowing, or Everything goes black, but your eyes are still open, that’s it!

The history of art, and that of modernism in particular, often serves a starting point for the work of Ryan Gander. In 2008 he embarked on a series inspired by Degas’ Petite danseuse de 14 ans (1865-1881), that controversial landmark in the history of Modernism. This figurative counterpoint becomes the matrix of a series of imaginative fictions; for Gander this is not about replicating Degas’ sculpture, “it’s about reproducing the character of the ballerina who posed for him”. So in this second life she is often found in the attitudes of a rebellious teenager, smoking, gazing into the distance, or in front of her tablet.
