Sophie Calle mingles first-hand accounts, photographs and narrated experiences in this work that results from a collaboration between the artist and the American author Paul Auster.
ln his novel Leviathan, Auster took inspiration from Sophie Calle to paint tthe portrait of Maria, one of its protagonists, thus mixing reality with fiction. For Gotham Handbook, Sophie Calle has fun reversing the process, attempting to identify the personality of a character created on this occasion by Auster. Through a series of artistic gestures, she follows the instructions of the novelist "for embellishing life in New York."
