German artist Isa Genzken became known in the mid 1980s for her sculptures which closely associated with architecture. Her work, which at times suggests the ruins of buildings in Germany’s recent past, combines diverse materials to which the artists assigns specific symbolic functions. In 2002, she contributed to the Documenta with a series of “12 New Buildings for Berlin” which addressed political issues and which referred to the scandal and convention over the reconstruction of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz. She extended this series until 2006 with these two works which reveal her concern for combining colours. These sculptures reveal a fragility and an elegance with their chromatic interplay based on the opposition between cold colours (green/blue) and warm colours (red/yellow).
