Stari Most
2007
Stari Most features the bridge of Mostar, destroyed during the war in Bosnia. Rebuilt in 2008 thanks to international aid, it is today a symbol of reconciliation between the Bosnian and Croat communities. The work harks back to the artist’s research into the medium of photography. Here the refraction essential to both human eye and camera lens is figured in painting: the left hand side of the painting shows half the bridge as if seen by an observer in the middle; on the right, the mirror image of the same bridge against a black background corresponds to the fall of light on the retina or on photographic film.
