Le palais du sultan à Zanzibar
1944
Born in South Africa, Irma Stern studied art in Germany, where she was associated the Expressionist movement. From 1919 onwards, she exhibited regularly in Europe and South Africa, where she moved back in 1926. Critical reactions, at first negative, became increasingly appreciative as she made an international name for herself. She mainly painted portraits, but with this picture gives us a highly expressive view of the Sultan’s palace on the island of Zanzibar, which she visited in 1939 and 1945.
