"For me colour is not an addition but rather, a liberation, as they say." (Consagra)
Pietro Consagra was awarded the International Grand Prix for sculpture at the 30th Venice Biennale in 1960. The frontal and two-dimensional dimension of his abstract constructions marks a desire to simplify the volume by incorporating colour as a major element. Here the bright orange evokes the artificiality of industrial chrome plating. Thus expressing all thedialectical vitality of a pop approach to abstraction that is specific to the ltalian scene.
