Platonic Solid
2010
Karla Black’s work draws on a number of traditions ranging from abstract expressionism to the feminist performance art of the 1970s. Her gestural compositions in modest and insubstantial materials (powdered chalk, make-up powder, paint pigments, plaster) offer a new take on sculpture, in the lineage of Anti-form. Karla Black invites the viewer to an essentially intuitive, ‘physical’ experience disconnected from verbal consciousness. Composed of six drawings covered mostly in powder, the installation Platonic Solid suggests a miniature desert, vulnerable and ephemeral in its beauty.
