[avant 1955]
Born in Versailles in 1897, Van der Steen studied English at Oxford University. Mobilised during the First World War, he was gassed, and returned suffering from a respiratory disorder. Painting became a means of distracting himself from his illness. The expressive power of this self-taught artist lies in his imaginative visions full of mythical creatures and extraordinary plants. He attracted the attention of the Naive art critic Anatole Jakovsky, who published Le Bestiaire magique de Van der Steen in 1967.
