Un entierro en mi pueblo
(Un enterrement dans mon village)
1920
After studying at the school of fine arts in Buenos Aires, Alfredo Gramajo Gutiérrez devoted his work to depicting the customs, rites and beliefs of the Indians in north-east Argentina. A Burial in my Village shows a procession of men and women in contemplative, pious attitudes. The gloomy expressions of the figures, heads bowed, enclosed within their grief, contrast vividly with the intense colours of their ponchos and the background landscape. This picture was one of eight works exhibited by the artist at the 1926 “Exposition d’art argentin” in the Musée du Jeu de Paume.
