Destroy all Monsters is an experimental music group formed in 1973 by Mike Kelley, Niagara (Lyn Rovner), Jim Shaw and Cary Loren, then art students at Michigan University. The group’s name came from the title of an apocalyptic Japanese B-movie. Influenced by the Velvet Underground, they created a sound at the crossroads of hippie, rock proto-punk and noise music cultures. Rejecting the star system, they performed and released recordings only occasionally and distributed their own magazines and cassettes through alternative outlets.
