"Black holds its own space and always holds itself in relation to a larger volume whose mass it modifies." (Serra)
Even when he draws on paper, Richard Serra is a sculptor. This work is the last in a series made after the Clara-Clara sculpture installed in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris in 1983, then in 2008. The impression of weight comes from the combination of the form of the drawing, the lower part of which is cut, and the thick black material specific to the artist. ln 1971 when he set about these large black drawings, he was elaborating an equivalent to his sculpture in another mode.
