Rehearsal for a reunion
2011
The work of Simon Fujiwara, an artist of English and Japanese parentage, engages the complexities of human relationships, memory and intercultural dialogue. In this video, he meets an actor to show him the script of a piece they are to perform together. The artist will play himself, the actor the artist’s father. Two tea services, gestures and dialogue, we hear, will serve to symbolize relations between parents and child and between two cultures. The autobiographical aspect of the script blurs the distinction between reality and invention, while the work and its symbolic objects invite us to consider the construction of representations of one culture and one generation to another.
