With their regularly aligned rounded spikes, these inhabitants of another world seem to have supernatural powers.
Sawada was diagnosed with autism at the age of 18. Since 2000, he has attended workshops at the Nakayoshi Fukushikai centre where he makes fantastical ceramic figures in around 20 different motifs. These hybrid creatures have an air of something human, animal or demon and are both fairy-tale-like and monstrous, seemingly drawn from a mythology as persona! as it is universal. Sawada 's scuIptures are fired in an isolated setting in the mountains in a wood-fired kiln according to an ancestral local technique and combine tradition and formal freedom.
