As part of the Constellation programme, which runs throughout the renovation of its iconic Parisian building, Centre Pompidou is joining forces with the Lyon Art Museums Cluster – the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée d'Art Contemporain – to co-organise a major exhibition exploring the practice of collecting in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition is being held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, alongside the 18th Lyon Art Biennale – Contemporary Art.

The program

Musée sentimental
(Sentimental Museum)
André Breton, Daniel Spoerri, Joseph Cornell, Annette Messager, Marcel Duchamp, Ben…

11 September 2026 – 14 March 2027

"Musée sentimental" explores a fundamental theme in the history of art and museums: the practice of collecting, or the attachment that objects—even the most trivial ones—can inspire through the power of memory or the emotions they evoke. Whether in the form of assemblages, accumulations, installations, cabinets of curiosities, display cases or boxes… artists of the 20th and 21st centuries have incorporated this as a creative process

The exhibition presents some sixty such works drawn from the combined holdings of three collections – the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon and Centre Pompidou. Placing them in dialogue allows us to compare their different approaches: from the wall of André Breton’s (1922–66) studio to Étienne-Martin’s (1963–85) Mur du Temps, reconstructed for the first time; from Joseph Cornell’s small "theatres of memory" (1950s) to the "centre of total art" that Ben’s Magasin (1958–73) represents; from Henri Ughetto’s mannequins (1970s) to the Weird Family sculpted by Sylvie Selig (2015–2026)…

The venue

The museum is located place des Terreaux, in the heart of the city centre, in a magnificent 17th century Benedictine abbey. Its cloister is now home to a quiet sculpture garden.

The museum’s encyclopedic collections are exhibited in five sections and seventy galleries presenting artworks from all the major civilizations and artistic schools, from Antiquity to the present day. The museum offers an exceptional tour of 5 000 years of art history with the masterpieces of Veronese, Rubens, Rembrandt, Poussin, Renoir, Gauguin, Chagall, Matisse and Picasso.

All year long, the museum organizes major temporary exhibitions, as well as cultural activities engaging all audiences.
