The Centre Pompidou is presenting eighteen works by French artist François Morellet on the occasion of a major donation of fourteen of his works. This generous gift enriches the group already present in the collection, and affords a greater appreciation of the different aspects of one of the most influential figures in the history of European art in the second half of the 20th century. An unprecedented exhibition of his installations was already held in 2011.

François Morellet was a self-taught artist whose research, carried out over more than 60 years, earned him a unique place as a major figure in the vast international movement of concrete art. A proponent of programmed forms and systematic procedures, he also upheld Neo-Dadaist humour and played a decisive role in demystifying the romantic figure of the artist. He was a forerunner of minimalist art and a key figure of optical and kinetic art and his constantly renewed experiments were responsible for some of the greatest moments in the history of geometric abstraction, without ever falling into the trap of well-meaning didacticism or puritanical pretension.
