Gay Guerrilla explores the heritage of queer Afro-American composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990) through dance, music and architecture. By channelling Eastman's unique voice, the Gerard & Kelly duo extend his practice, connecting abstraction and politics in an animated installation with a series of performances designed specifically for Gallery 3 of the Centre Pompidou.

Eastman infused his musical experimentalism with the passion of political commitment, declaring himself to be "black to the maximum, musician to the maximum, homosexual to the maximum". Gerard & Kelly redesign Gallery 3 as a minimalist discotheque comprising new metal and neon sculptures along with monotypes on paper.

Written by Eastman ten years after the Stonewall riots, Gay Guerrilla (1979) calls on the performers and audience to join the cause of queer liberation. Gerard & Kelly create a new performance, also called Gay Guerrilla, with the collaboration of the American musicians of the Wild Up and Amoc* ensembles, opera singer Davóne Tines, performer Soa de Muse, and the dancers of the Ballet of the Opéra National de Paris, including star dancers Guillaume Diop and Germain Louvet.

The performance on 30 June will be followed by a discussion with the artists about the Gay Guerrilla project at 4.15pm.

The performance on 1 July is broadcast live.

Américains vivant à Paris, Brennan Gerard et Ryan Kelly collaborent depuis 2003 à travers la performance, la vidéo et l’installation, entre autres formats. Ayant étudié les arts visuels, la littérature et les études de genre, Gerard & Kelly utilisent des stratégies conceptuelles dans l’art et la danse pour aborder des thèmes plus larges comme la mémoire, l’histoire, la sexualité et l’identité. Leurs réflexions s’inscrivent souvent dans un espace architectural particulier, engageant les antécédents socioculturels et politiques du site dans leur travail.
Lauréats du Whitney Independent Study Program à New York, ils sont diplômés de l’Interdisciplinary Studio de l’université de Californie, Los Angeles (UCLA).
