Grounded in his Mexican roots and his memories as an immigrant worker, the work of Ramirez was encouraged thanks to psychiatrist Tarmo Pasto.
Martin Ramirez left Mexico for California at the age of 30. Confronted with isolation and exhausting work as a miner, his health deteriorated and he was diagnosed as schizophrenic in 1931. Permanently institutionalised, he created large drawings with pencils and mixtures he prepared on various found or stolen papers that he then assembled meticulously. Here the collage of envelopes and newspapers is the support for the work. The Virgin Mary casts her loving eyes on a vegetal and animal world where vehicles arrive from a tunnel, followed by a lone horseman.
