In the mid-Eighties, Robert Gober began to take an interest in standard-model, ordinary objects which he metamorphosed into unique pieces, reproducing them in materials different from the originals: a fundamental change going beyond the subtle changes of scale he also applied. At that time, the washbasin, urinal and fragments of the human body evoked Marcel Duchamp’s ready-made, imbued with a metaphorical, animistic dimension that was highly unusual and humorous. Since the Nineties, he has been juxtaposing materials that contrast strongly with each other in terms of their materiality and their industrial or domestic nature. Untitled, 2006/2007, is a carved rectangular block reconstituting the expanded polystyrene surface, pierced through by a patinated tubular structure. This re-making of elements used in the building sector upsets the logical order of reality.
