L'Encoconnage
1972
Feeling trapped as she juggled with her life as an artist, mother and wife, Françoise Janicot wanted to create a strong image that could symbolise both entrapment and escape. Putting her own body to the question, she tied herself up with cord, covering even the face and risking suffocation before cutting herself free. By means of this performance and the photograph that is its trace, she drew attention to woman’s condition. The title L’Encoconnage [Cocooning] evokes the insect enclosed in its cocoon and metaphorically suggests isolation from the outer world, reflecting patriarchal society’s consignment of women to the domestic sphere.
