Tabula
1974
Involved in the Surrealist movement between 1951 and 1954, Simon Hantaï then turned to a gestural painting. It was in 1960 that he adopted his “folding method.” Between then and 1982, eight series of paintings explored as many ways of folding the canvas. No longer a plane of projection, the folded canvas was painted “blind” by an artist concerned to eliminate his own subjectivity from the work, which revealed itself only when unfolded, in the relation of painted and non-painted areas. The “Tabula” series has two phases. The first (1974-1976) deploys a relatively tight grid, while the second sees the square expand and its form break up. A pure, rigorous, minimalist abstract, the great dark blue painting that is Tabula (1974) nonetheless retains the memory of the traditional Hungarian check apron the painter’s mother used to wear.
