276 (On Color) [Yellow]
1990 / 2016
For Joseph Kosuth, founder and theorist of Conceptual Art, the idea of the work is the key aspect of artistic practice and language the most suitable medium for the expression of ideas. Influenced by Wittgenstein, Kosuth – for whom “Art is a tautology” – conceived the artwork as a simple statement, a self-referential analytic proposition: “Art is the definition of art”. 276 (On Color) [Yellow] – whose title refers to Remark 276 of Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations – is a light sculpture of yellow neon tubes concerned with the perception of colour. Here, what is communicated by the text is put to the test of the experience of the text itself in colour

276 But don't we at least mean something quite definite when we look at a colour and name our colour impression? it is as if we detached the colour impression from the object like a membrane (This ought to arouse our suspicions)
