Open House
2012
The recent work of American artist Michael Zelehoski challenges our perceptions of the world in inserting objects into pictorial space. These three-dimensional elements (wooden chests, cabins, gates…) are disassembled by the artist, cut and inlaid in a plane surface, in a way that deprives them of volume but still suggests depth. While also alluding to the cut-up houses of Gordon Matta-Clark, Open House literally contains the object of its title, its fusion of three-dimensional reality and its two-dimensional representation suggesting a reconciliation of subject and object.
