A representative of a certain West Coast Minimalism, in 1961 American artist Larry Bell added polished glass and mirror to his repertoire of materials, so as to explore the ideas of visual perception and illusion. The cube represents the key form of his work: set on a transparent base, it generates with its partly mirrored sides a subtle play of transparency and opacity. The reflectivity of the glass varies with the movements of the viewer, who is presented with shifting gradations of colour that blur the boundaries of the exhibition space. Since the late 1960s, the artist has taken meticulous care over the execution of his installations, works of very great technological refinement.
